Ford Receives Double the Expected Number of Orders for Fiesta ST; Increases Production of Fast-Selling Hot Hatch

COLOGNE , Germany, July 31, 2013 – Ford Motor Company is increasing production of the critically-acclaimed new Fiesta ST hot hatch after receiving twice as many orders as expected in Europe in its first six months on sale.

Ford has received nearly 10,000 orders for the new Fiesta ST since it went on sale in March. To help meet demand, Ford is increasing production by 15 per cent to 60 vehicles per day at the company’s assembly plant in Cologne, Germany.

Demand for Ford’s new Fiesta ST has been driven by customers in the U.K., who have purchased 56 per cent of all models sold in Europe to date, followed by Germany and Switzerland, with these three markets accounting for more than 87 per cent of European sales.

The new Fiesta ST unique colours Molten Orange and Spirit Blue have been requested on 45 per cent of orders and 56 per cent of customers have opted for higher specification ST2 models.

“The customer and critical reaction to the Fiesta ST has been extraordinary – it’s really become an instant classic and orders have been extremely strong,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “We are doing what we can to increase production and try to meet demand.”

The new Fiesta ST has received glowing reviews from automotive media across Europe:

  • BBC Top Gear (U.K.) named the Fiesta ST as the winner of its hot hatch group test ahead of the Peugeot 208 GTi and Renaultsport Clio, declaring: “Everything about the Fiesta ST – the steering, the handling, the responsiveness – is peerless”. World-renowned motoring journalist and presenter Jeremy Clarkson said: “ I honestly haven't driven a car as surprising or as likeable as this for a very long while.”
  • Auto Bild (Germany) placed the Fiesta ST ahead of the Seat Ibiza Cupra, calling it: “ loud, simple, affordable, cheeky if you want, and really fast when it should be. ”
  • Motorsport (France) declared the Fiesta ST as the winner of its comparison against the Abarth Punto Evo Supersport, Peugeot 208 GTi and Renaultsport Clio, saying: “A true GTI must have kept a child’s soul, remain playful and lively, without forgetting the precise handling. The Fiesta ST gathers all those qualities.”

The Ford vehicle dynamics department that developed the Fiesta ST earlier this year was named the Dynamics Team of the Year at the 2013 Vehicle Dynamics International Awards, and Ford Team RS vehicle dynamics specialist David Put won the title of Dynamicist of the Year.

The new Fiesta ST offers performance-tuned steering, suspension, brakes and enhanced Torque Vectoring Control; as well as Ford MyKey, SYNC with Emergency Assistance and Recaro sports seats. Powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, it achieves 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and delivers 182 PS and 240 Nm of torque, with a fuel consumption of only 5.9 l/100 km and 138 g/km CO2 emissions.*

The success of the new Fiesta ST follows on the heels of the Focus ST, which went on sale in summer 2012. Equipped with a 250 PS 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, the Focus ST was the best-selling hot hatch in Europe during the first six months of 2013, with 4,000 sales.
